The Treasury at Petra

In short: the best months

Spring (March to May)

This is the ideal time for Petra, Dana and Wadi Rum. It is also high season: the hotels of Wadi Musa fill up, book early. From 2 March to 1 October, Petra opens from 6:00 to 18:00.

Summer (June to August)

Days are very hot in the south (Petra, Wadi Rum, Aqaba) and at the Dead Sea, where general climate data often put temperatures well above 35 °C. Arrive at opening, walk early and rest in the middle of the day. Amman and the north (Jerash, Ajloun) are more bearable. The Red Sea is warm: a good time for Aqaba.

Autumn (September to November)

The heat eases in October and November: very good for Petra and the desert. From 2 October 2026, Petra opens from 6:30 to 17:00: days get shorter, start early.

Winter (December to February)

It is cool, with rain, sometimes snow on the heights. At Petra, rain can make the site slippery and the Siq can close because of flood risk: follow the site's instructions. In Wadi Rum, nights are cold, close to zero: see the bubble camp if you sleep there. It is however a good season for the Dead Sea and Aqaba.

Ramadan and holidays

Ramadan 2027 falls roughly from early February to early March (exact dates depend on the moon). Sites stay open, but restaurant and some shop hours change, especially in the daytime, and alcohol is harder to find. Allow some flexibility.
