The Treasury at Petra

The dinar in brief

At the Wadi Rum visitor centre, count only on cash dinars: there is generally no ATM or exchange (Wadi Rum). For Dead Sea day passes, also plan cash (the day pass).

Where to withdraw and exchange

Withdraw at bank ATMs rather than isolated machines, and exchange at exchange offices in airports and big cities. Withdraw before heading to the desert or Petra. For the overall budget: the travel budget for Jordan.

Tipping: the customs

These ranges come from several travel guides and differ from one source to another. For a driver by the day, see the private driver.

Bargaining

In the souks and at souvenir sellers, the asking price is negotiable: offer less, stay polite, walk away if the price does not suit. Restaurants, hotels and official sites have fixed prices. For taxis, ask for the meter or fix the price before getting in. For excursions, Wadi Rum offers have reference prices per vehicle; ask what is included.

Before you go

  • Buy the Jordan Pass online: it cuts entry spending and the visa.
  • Keep small notes (1, 5, 10 JD) for tips and taxis.
  • Check your bank's foreign fees.
