Amman souks and downtown (Al-Balad): what to see, what to eat, tips for 2026

Updated on October 23, 2026

Al-Balad, Amman's historic centre, is visited on foot in 2 to 3 hours: lanes of merchants, spice and fruit stalls, the Al-Husseini Mosque, the Roman Theatre and popular restaurants. Entry is free, with no ticket and no fixed hours; shops generally open in late morning and stay open late in the evening. On Friday mornings many businesses are closed (prayer day) and the district is quiet; it is liveliest on Saturday evenings.

Highlights

The Al-Husseini Mosque

The Al-Husseini Mosque

In the heart of the old centre, its two minarets overlook the square; non-Muslims can look from the outside, and visiting the interior is not guaranteed.

The souks and King Faisal Street

Spices, clothes, fabrics, perfumes and fruit; here you haggle, with a smile.

The Roman Theatre and the Nymphaeum

The 2nd-century Roman Theatre is a few steps away; just look up to see the citadel above.

Hashem and knafeh

Hashem, a popular restaurant known for its hummus, foul and falafel (a plate for a few dinars); for dessert, a hot knafeh at Habibah, with the usual queue at the original shop.

Tips

  • Come in the late afternoon: the light is lovely, the heat drops and the district comes alive. Keep small change: prices in popular restaurants stay low (a few dinars), but exact amounts change, so ask before ordering. Haggle for souvenirs, not for food. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered), especially near the mosque. During Ramadan most food places are closed from sunrise to sunset. Watch your belongings in the crowd. Combine with the Amman Citadel and the Roman Theatre, then finish on Rainbow Street. For a guided walk of the centre with tastings, see the Amman city tour. The full route: Amman in one day.

How to get there

Al-Balad is the city centre, at the foot of the citadel. From Abdali or Jabal Amman a taxi costs a few dinars (ask for the meter); the district is then explored on foot. Back to Amman.

Opening hours
