Roman Theatre in Amman: visit, opening hours and ticket price

Updated on October 23, 2026

The Roman Theatre of Amman (ancient Philadelphia) is the easiest monument to visit in the capital: it stands in the middle of downtown, at the foot of the Citadel hill. Built in the 2nd century under Antoninus Pius, it could hold about 6,000 spectators and still hosts concerts and events today. The visit takes about an hour, two with the museums and the Odeon.

Highlights

The seating

Three tiers of seats cut into the hillside; the climb to the top gives a fine view of downtown and the houses on the opposite hill.

In front of the theatre, the large paved square is a meeting point and the natural starting place for downtown and its souks.

The two small museums

In the wings of the theatre, one museum is devoted to popular traditions and another to Jordanian folklore (costumes, jewellery, everyday objects).

The Odeon and the nymphaeum

A few steps away, a small covered theatre of about 500 seats and the remains of a monumental Roman fountain, both reachable on foot.

Tips

  • Entry: about 2 JD for non-Jordanians according to the Jordan Tourism Board fee table (the row label is ambiguous: confirm at the ticket office). It is included in the Jordan Pass, which also covers the visa if you stay at least two consecutive nights; see Jordan Pass. The neighbouring car park is paid (one traveller reported about 3 JD in 2025). Combine the visit with the Amman Citadel (3 JD) and downtown and its souks, all within walking distance (the climb to the Citadel is steep: take a taxi); together these three stops fill half a day. For the whole city, see Amman.

How to get there

The theatre is in central Amman, on Al-Hashemi Street, a few minutes' walk from the souks. From Rainbow Street or the First Circle, a taxi costs a few dinars. See Amman.

Opening hours

Best: Early morning or late afternoon
Usually open from 8:00 until late afternoon (later in summer); exact 2026 hours not confirmed, check on site
