Rainbow Street is the most pleasant street in Amman for an evening out: about a kilometre of cafés, restaurants, craft shops and terraces on Jabal Amman, between the First and Second Circles. The area slopes gently, full of old stone houses, and it attracts locals as much as travellers. Allow 2 to 3 hours to stroll and have dinner, more in the late afternoon after the Citadel.
Highlights

The street
A long sloping street lined with old houses, cafés and shops; it is liveliest in the evening and at weekends (Friday and Saturday).

The small shops
Grocers, souvenir shops, bookshops and galleries: the mood is more relaxed than downtown.
The hillside terraces
Several cafés and restaurants have terraces or rooftops overlooking the hills of Amman, ideal at sunset.
The lanes of Jabal Amman
Off the main street you find galleries, craft workshops and staircases leading down to downtown.

Tips
- There is no entry fee; count mainly the price of a coffee or a meal (prices here are higher than downtown). For a cheap local meal, finish the evening in downtown Amman, where you eat falafel and hummus. Combine the evening with the Citadel in the afternoon and the Roman Theatre. Dress casually and keep change for taxis. For a full itinerary, see Amman in 1 day and the city overview: Amman.
How to get there
Rainbow Street is on Jabal Amman, about 5 minutes by taxi from downtown and near the First Circle. Use a taxi or an app (Uber, Careem) from your hotel; the walk up from downtown is steep.
